ABSTRACT      Objectives: 1. To describe the histopathological findings in clinically cured cases o Design: Descriptive Study Setting: Hospital Setting, institutional level of care Patients: 30 Results: Nine out of thirty clinically cured cases of leprosy showed persistent granulomas consisting mostly of epithelioid cells or foamy histiocytes with few lymphocytes around adnexal structures. Acid fast bacilli were not found within the granulomas. It was found in this study that there is regression of the granulomas even after cessation of treatment as evident in all the 9 patients, although complete regression was seen in 6 of them. Persistent granulomas in paucibacillary patients regressed completely while granulomas in multibacillary patients requires a longer period of time to regress. There was no evidence of relapse seen among the patients with persistent granuloma within 1 year of surveillance after stopping multidrug therapy. (Author)
