ABSTRACT
The gold standard for the diagnosis of mycoses is still the culturing and identification of the etiologic agent. However, there are times when this is neither practical nor cost effective. In such instances, it is necessary to rely upon direct examination or histopathological procedures. With adequate expertise, most of the mycoses can be diagnosed at least to the level where therapy can be initiated
The major mycoses which are found in the Philippines will be presented from this point of view. Direct examination and histopathological procedures will be described. Photomicrographs of the major mycoses will be presented along with a description and differential narrative on each one. Mycoses to be covered include: aspergillosis, candidiasis, chromomycosis, cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, mycetomas, mycotic keratitis, penicilliosis and phycomycosis.
